In Brazil, postgraduate programs are accredited and evaluated every four years by the Coordination of Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), which assigns the concept of 3 to 7 to the course depending on its performance. The lowest grade refers to a course with satisfactory assessment and with authorization to operate only at master's level. A grade 7 refers to a program whose level is comparable to the best courses in the area abroad. Periodically the area committees (eg Biodiversity) meet and elaborate so-called Area Documents, which bring the main indicators of each area of knowledge to be used as a basis for the evaluation criteria of the programs.

In 2009 CAPES authorized the opening of PPGECB with concept 4 and in 2011 the program opened its first PhD degree. Since its opening the program has been very well evaluated by CAPES, and in the last evaluation (quadrennial 2017) the program reached concept 5 and already started working towards 6!

Here are some CAPES documents that guide or evaluate our program:

Four-year evaluation

The document provides an evaluation of the production, insertion and concept of the program during the quadrennium 2013-2016.

Area document 2013-2016

In this document the criteria used by CAPES to evaluate the programs are put in a very objective way.

CAPES authorization form for the opening of the Doctorate of PPGECB

Document that gives an overview of the newly initiated master's degree course and the reasons that led CAPES to allow the opening of a doctorate before even the defense of the first group of masters.
